Cheap home decorating ideas can make a great space

Using cheap home decorating ideas can be the secret to making this dining room living room makeover look so great.

I have somewhat completed my dining room living room, which I ended up using more modern home accessories than I usually do.

With David returning from Afghanistan, Christmas, and my nephews cancer, I was slow at getting this project finished.

The room is very close to complete,  just waiting on hardwood floors, crown molding, and a few home decor accessories need to be added.   Even though I changed my mind a gazillion times, I am very happy with the final result!

When we moved in a year ago, my living room dining room combo went from looking like this to this, and then this.

I was hoping to go with yellow and gray, I was crushing on that contemporary color combination.  However,  when that love affair was over, I moved on to this.

Because I couldn’t live with my daughter telling me we had racoon tails hanging from our curtains, I had to change my curtains again!

I am so very happy to show you how it looks today!   Except my ceiling chandelier needs to be hung..

I did end up being able to use yellow and gray, just not a true gray, grays have always read lavender and baby blue in this house!.  I went with a blue gray and it was the perfect fit with my living/dining paint color.

We have a little bit more to do with my dining room before I will say it is totally complete.  Even then, I’m sure I will change my mind 100 times again.

I still need to print out family pictures for my picture frames, re gift the oil painting,

a tall houseplant to fill in this gap.

And the right centerpiece for my dining table.

I can’t wait until we get hardwood floors and crown molding, those are the details that will complete this room. But in the meantime, I am very happy with it.  I think it has just the right amount of modern home accessories to make it look young and current, with just enough tradional influence to show my style,  but has some rustic elements added to make it warm and inviting.  I just love it and it is so me!

How to Decorate a Dorm Room

How to Decorate a Dorm Room

Are you college bound and search for ideas for your dorm room?

I was shopping yesturday, and this quilt caught my attention!

This has to be my most favorite, hip, and trendy bedding, and it is sold at Target.  What I would do to have a girl’s dorm room to decorate this fall.

I don’t, so I thought I would blog about how I would decorate a girl’s dorm and live vicariously through all of you moms that get to do so!

Talk about trending colors!  I love the tangerine, yellow, pink, and turquoise color combination.  The paisley print is to die for as well!  This is just a vibrant and fun quilt.

It even has a cute matching pillow!

Or course every dorm room needs lighting, and this is a great lamp!

A clip on lamp would be a necessity for those late night cramming sessions!

Here are coordinating 3 to a pack picture frames that you gotta have too!  They are 5 bucks a pack at Target as well.  Gotta have pictures displayed of friends and family!  Personal photos are a great way to warm up a cold dorm room!

A rug is going to help make the room feel warm and cozy too.  You need comfy rugs for those late night girl talks!

Here are other great ideas for adding storage to your dorm room.

These $3.00 storage ideas include the hanging shoe organizer (good space saver for that small closet) and storage bin for all the loose items that just need to be placed somewhere other than the floor!

Remember storage is going to be limited in your dorm room!

All hip dorms have to have hanging paper lanterns! These are very trendy right now.  They are sold online, party stores, and even Target sells them.

A dry erase small refrigerator would also be an added plus!  How neat to leave notes for roommates!  Or even to draw cutesies on!

I hope you have enjoyed my ideas for decorating a dorm room!

Maybe you are able to use some of my ideas.  Enjoy that move in day with your daughter.

Don’t forget to remind her of the importance of being responsible, the dangers of drugs, drinking and driving, and even binge drinking.  Educate her on how to avoid college sexual assaults, to be aware that guys really do use date rape drugs,  and remind her to ALWAYS  use the buddy system- ALWAYS!

And remember it’s ok if you cry and if you even have to pack her back up and take her back home!

HA just kidding!

Please share your comments, thoughts, and own ideas.

I would love to see photos of how you Recreate and Decorate your dorm room!!

3 Easy House to Home tips

3 Easy House to Home tips

A month ago I was asked to guest blog for The Blog for Brides.    Newlyweds are a very passionate group of young ladies that are eager to transition from house to home!  I was thrilled with the opportunity because lord knows, I have a ton of  non professional interior design experience in that department!!  I loved being able to share a few tips for creating and turning a house into a home and look forward to be able to do so again!

Here is what I wrote for The Blog for Brides!

Hello to all of you newlyweds and brides to be, I am Wanda from Recreate and Decorate, who absolutely loves decorating a home and creating that special place that my family calls home.  I would like to congratulate you on the biggest decision of your life.  I truly hope your adventure will be as great as mine has been!  There is nothing better than marrying the love of your life and creating your very special place and making it a home.  I can feel the butterflies and the excitement that you have to be feeling about decorating your home, and I am so excited to be here to help!

There are so many things to consider when decorating your home, but here are several must have’s that I think should be at the top of the list!

When you are making your first house a home, it is important to make sure that your home reflects the both of you! Yes that means if your husband doesn’t like that big floral couch or that pink bedding set, you CAN’T  buy or use it!   Remember this is a time for the two of you to come together and become one.  You can bring those prints or colors into the room with other home decor accessories!  If your home does not represent who you both are as a couple, your home will never feel like home!  I know, I did this once and it was the worse decorating experience I have ever had!  You can read more about it here.  I never felt like that was my home the entire time I lived there!

The focus of your home should be creating the atmosphere that makes your home feel welcoming and relaxing.  The place that when you walk in the front door, you can’t help but say “Honey, I’m Home!”   A place that no other place can compare to.  That feeling should be warm, welcoming, cozy, and a place where you feel you belong.  I like to use candles.  Candles are an inexpensive home decor accessory and add a lot of warmth to your home.  They also can leave your home smelling great!

Tip my husband does not like the floral scents, he prefers scents that are like baked goodies, vanilla, and anything with cinnamon.   Because your family room will become the heart of your home,  here are many ways to use candles to decorate your family room.  If you have a fireplace, you can add them on your mantle, and I just love when several different sized candles are used together and placed inside a fireplace.

If you don’t have a fireplace, just arrange the candles on your coffee table or other pieces of furniture.  Light the candles when you want to create a relaxing environment or when you are entertaining family orRecreate and Decorate

Fresh flowers and indoor green plants are another great way to add coziness to your home.

Peace lilies are a great green plant that can be used as a home decor accessory and they are the perfect indoor plant choice for beginners.

Gardening on Cloud Nine

Personal photos are also a great way to add warmth to your home.  Your beautiful wedding photos will be perfect for this.  There are  number of ways to display those photos, but I love the gallery wall.  Especially black and white photos in white frames like these from Pottery Barn. house to home house to home House and Home.com

Hopefully I have left you with some great examples to go from having just a house to a home.  It does not matter what decorating style you may have, as long as you create the perfect environment, you and your husband will spend a lot of time there together.  One day soon, one of you will be able to walk in the front door and say “Honey, I’m Home” and truly feel like you are home.
