my 3 “how to make a fabric headboard” contenders

my 3 “how to make a fabric headboard” contenders

I’ve been looking for DIY headboards lately.

I’m finally getting around to re-decorating my guest bedroom.   I have to admit, I have been dragging my feet on this one.  Not because I don’t care, but because I want a DIY headboard and there are too headboard ideas to choose from.

Being military and moving so much, a guest room is often a bonus in a home.  Therefore it has never really been a top priority, but now that we live so close to family, it has become a must do priority.

We have David’s IKEA bed frame from years ago that has held up through out all the moves.  It just doesn’t have a headboard, so instead of buying one, we are going to make a headboard for it..

I have been searching all over the internet trying to find tutorials on DIY headboard.  David doesn’t know it yet, but it is going to become a weekend DIY home decor project for us to do.

Headboards are often the focal point of a bedroom so therefore I want mine to WOW you when you walk in the room.

Here are my final 3  headboard  tutorials that I like and I thought I would share them with you as well.

All things thrifty made a great contemporary fabric headboard and it truly makes a statement when you walk into the room. How to make a fabric headboard all things thrifty.comLike she says, “go big or go home!”

This particular fabric headboard is quite larger than what I would like, but scaling it down would not be hard at all. .

I really like this fabric tufted headboard from Censational girl.centsationalgirl.com tufted diy headboard tutorial

I love the texture of this fabric.   And I think the tufted buttons add much class and make this more traditional in style.

I’m thinking this might just be the one!

And the last DIY  headboard contender  is by Young House Love.younghouselove.com DIY headboard

I chose this particular headboard because of the simplicity of the actual headboard, but with the wow factor added with the floral fabric.    The fabric you choose will determine what decorating style it will be, but a large bold floral would be perfect.

All 3 of these tutorials for making a fabric headboard are very simple to understand.  I don’t think we will have a difficult time trying to make a headboard.

Now I’m really getting inspired to finish that guest room.

Which DIY headboard do you like the best?

Have you ever made a fabric headboard?

Cha cha cha changes

Cha cha cha changes

As you know, I have been giving my dining room/living room a complete makeover!  Remember how I first shared my feelings about my dining room here, then after being gone for the summer and returning home, I just couldn’t get the living room quite right.   I made some decisions and thought I had made progress, which quickly resulted in my gray and yellow love affair being over  because gray is just to0 difficult to get along with, leaving me in a state of undecisiveness for a few weeks now, but I am so happy to bring you up to date with the final decisions I have made!

Remember, my dining room started out looking like this.

And my living room looked like this.

After coming home from being gone all summer, I rearranged the furniture to this.

After weeks of not being happy, I decided to swap the furniture.  Today the furniture placement looks like this!

I flipped the two rooms.   The dining room is the focal point when you walk in the front door now.

The smaller area ended up being the perfect little cozy space for my chair and chaise.

I ended up deciding on these 2 fabrics for my curtains and ottoman.  Thank you JoAnne’s  for your Columbus Day Sale, a great 50% off sale!  I chose a more traditional fabric and adding a more contemporary fabric to the ottoman, these fabrics used together will help create a transitional decorating styled room.

Eventhough I LOVE this fabric,  I just just couldn’t get past the raccoon tails!   Thanks Hayley!

I am pleased to announce my handyman will be home in about 50 days now!  Can’t wait, he has some work to do to totally finish up this room!  The chandelier has to be swapped, pictures need to be hung, curtain rods need to be rehung to 108 inches, and 6 beautiful tufted, linen chairs need to be put together!  I returned the other dining room chair, it was the wrong color gray!  imagine that!

Along with a never ending honey do list!  I think I deserve a pat on my back, as anxious as I am to update and decorate this house, I have been very patient as my husband focuses on this deployment.  Patience is not one of my strengths, especially if it has to do with recreating and decorating my house!!

You know I love your feedback!  So what do you think about the changes?  I love the dining room table and linen chairs as the focal point, what about you?

When a love affair is over

When a love affair is over

Well I have some good news and some bad news.  Remember all the work I had put into my living/dining room?  Well the bad news is that my love affair with gray and yellow is over, over for my living/dining room  I mean, it just wasn’t meant to be.  I know, I was a little heartbroken, but I got over it and moved on.   We decided that it was best to remain friends.  Gray can be a challenge to get along with!   Maybe you will be the right fit for gray!

I decided to change the  fabric because I had ordered this rug and dining room chair.

I absolutely loved both of them but they made my Gateway Gray paint color green!  Even though gateway gray is a green gray, I was really hoping to accentuate more gray with the gray rug and chair.   The rug is a blue gray.  My beautiful yellow and gray fabrics just were not working in that room.  All the grays were different shades!

Remember my friend Heather from Renewal Home Decor, just like a good friend will do, she listened, helped me stay focus, and suggested this fabric.

I saw this exact fabric at Ballard’s last year and remember thinking, “that would look great with my gateway gray”.   However as time passed, I began a new love affair with yellow and gray and thought they were the colors for me!

I’m very happy with the choice I made.  I think it looks great with the chairs, rug and paint!

Calico Corner even had it paired with yellow!  So maybe just maybe I can use something like this fabric and still be able to get my yellow and gray fix!

However there is one slight problem with the new fabric, Hayley says the fabric looks like raccoon tails!  What?  So now I am second guessing the fabric!   I sure don’t want raccoon tails hanging on my curtains!!

So please be honest with me!  Do you see raccoon tails?

How do you like this fabric compared to the yellow and gray fabric?  Have you been able to use yellow and gray with no complications?

Oh and what do you think about my rug and chair choices?

PS  my giveaway ends this Sunday!  Please make sure you comment so I can have your contact information!

Look what I “RECREATED”

Look what I “RECREATED”

Not too long ago, my youngest daughter, Gabby, surprised the snot out of me when we were in Claire’s at the mall.  She was shopping with her gift cards that she had received.  She was looking around and all of a sudden she sees head bands, pretty head bands, head bands with big flowers on them!  I was stunned!  Probably even speechless!! (yes I have had a few speechless moments in my life!)  You see I was that mom who LOVED hair bows and, my girls wore them a lot when they were younger, but as they got older, I had to give up that control and allow them to wear their hair the way they wanted!  And what did they want to do with it? NOTHING!!!!  Just brush it (sometimes) and go!  My oldest will put her hair in a ponytail from time to time, or even wear hair bows!  (ATTENTION MOMS:  hold on to to those big hair bows, your daughter will come back to them in 6th grade!!!)   Gabby has beautiful, long, blonde hair and she likes for it to be down, no hair clip, no hair bow, nothing!  So you can imagine how stunned I was when she was excited to see the headbands and was actually picking out the ones that she wanted!  This mama was in HEAVEN!!   I am a girly mom, and my girls have become somewhat “less girly” than I anticipated!   We came home that night with about 5 head bands and I think Gabby has worn one in her hair every day since!!  WOO HOO!!!

I had come across this head band craft project a while ago, but just oohed over the thought of it, thinking how fun it would be to make and be able to use!  I came across it again a few days ago and knew we had to make it!  Gabby’s bedroom is somewhat a hawaiian/surfer style bedroom (we moved here from Hawaii) so I found this cute hawaiian fabric from Jo Anne’s that matches her room.  Hawaiian or surfer fabric is not easy to find here in FL!  I ran to Walmart and bought the large container of oatmeal, the Great Value brand worked for me!

I came home and within 15 minutes, I RECREATED  a project and made this!   How cute is that!!

Here is what you need

1/2 yard of fabric

Large oatmeal container

hot glue gun

mod podge/ glue

3/8 inch ribbon

scissors

artificial flowers

What I did:

Cut the fabric a little larger than the container   I then used LOCTITE spray adhesive and sprayed the container with the adhesive.  Mod Podge will work as well.

I then wrapped the fabric tightly around the container.  You could use gift wrapping paper as well.  Just make sure it is darker or thick enough or you will be able to see the print from the oatmeal container through the paper.   I trimmed the fabric to fit the container.  I added 3/8″ of ribbon to to the top and bottom of the fabric covered container to cover any frayed fabric.  I then hot glued artificial hibiscus flowers to the top of the plastic lid.  I used 4 flowers because they were large.

I then added head bands and TA DA!   15 minutes later, I have this!!

A cute head band holder!  PLUS storage (inside the container) for all the clips and bows that I bought that she may decide to wear, one day!   (fingers crossed) Now we get to see just how long Gabby will actually use this!

I found several different sites that have posted this project.  Check them out because they will show you different ideas!  Thanks Ladies!!
