Reunited and it feels so good

Reunited and it feels so good

Yay, my honey is home from Afghanistan!   His deployment is over.

Actually he has been home for several weeks now, hey it’s better late than never, right?    He actually came home a week earlier than expected and I had to keep a secret!  I found out the week of Thanksgiving that he would be coming home but he wanted to totally surprise the girls.   A hard secret not to share, but I managed.  My first response when he told me was  ”crap, the house ain’t even clean”!

I had hired a cleaning crew to come in that following week to totally clean and get the house ready for David.  Unfortunately, I had to cancel.

The girls and I returned home after Thanksgiving and we started getting things ready for David.  Anyone that has lived through a deployment or the absence of a husband for a few months, knows that routines change and priorities shift resulting into whatever works to survive!  Needless to say, keeping the house spotless just did not make it to the top of my priorities, or the girls’ either!

Banners on the Cheap had contacted me earlier in the deployment asking to show their appreciation and support for our troops by offering up some swag.  Heck yeah!  They have many to choose from, but when we saw this one with the dogtags, we knew it was the one!  Perfect for my soldier!

I have to say that hanging these banners on our home was the best feeling of all!  Not only did we feel the relief of a deployment coming to an end, but the pride we felt for being a military family was indescribable.  I highly recommend this company, they support our troops and we need to support them.  These banners are thick, very good quality and are Very affordable.   Shipping was quick too.

If your guy is coming home, you really need to get a banner.   Even if you aren’t military, there are many others to choose from.

Monday morning came,  the girls went about preparing for another week of school;  it was business as usual.    I was picking David up at the airport and were going to check the girls out of school for the day.   Little did I know, Fox News of Tampa Bay would be there, cameras and all!   My wonderful sister had contacted Fox News and informed them of David’s early return from Afghanistan,  they wanted to pick up the story.

Here’s how the surprise went down.

I had contacted the school earlier to inform them that David would be coming to surprise Gabby.  Her class was at lunch so we were able to set up in the classroom and wait on her to enter.   Gabby was pretty shocked as she walked in the door, she actually stopped dead  in her tracks for a moment.   I figured she would have screamed, but she was very quiet, in fact the room was so quiet, we could have heard a pin drop!  Gabby said nothing as she ran over to her daddy!   You  can seen entire Fox news story here.

We collected ourselves and off to get Hayley from the middle school.    David stayed back in a room off of the front office so when Hayley came in, she immediately started freaking out thinking something was wrong!  I really thought she was going to have a panic attack and her daddy had to quickly show himself so she could settle down and breath!  Once she saw David, she screamed “daddy” and jumped into his arms and started to sob.

Many teachers and staff had heard what was going on and so they began to come and view the homecoming.   Not a dry eye in the room!

It’s really interesting how  both girls reacted!  We had thought Gabby would be the one screaming and crying and Hayley would remain her calm, cool, and collected self.   They surprised us with how they reacted!

It took us a few days to actually feel normal and realize it was not a dream.

Three weeks later, I am happy to report things are back to normal!  My sleep is disturbed due to my snoring husband, my laundry basket is overflowing, my floors need to be continuously swept, and dirty dishes are piled up in the sink.

The girls and I are back to fussing because it is too cold in the house, losing control of the remote control, somewhat enjoying duck dynasty,  reluctantly watching doomsday preppers, and secretly thanking god that my dad’s golf shows recorded over all episodes of  Walking dead.  Yes God does work in mysterious ways!

And my husband puts the preppy into prepping!

But its all good, deployment is over, my life is once again complete, I feel grounded and my honey do’s are back on schedule!

Welcome home honey!

I love you!

As you know, I have been giving my dining room/living room a complete makeover!  Remember how I first shared my feelings about my dining room here, then after being gone for the summer and returning home, I just couldn’t get the living room quite right.   I made some decisions and thought I had made progress, which quickly resulted in my gray and yellow love affair being over  because gray is just to0 difficult to get along with, leaving me in a state of undecisiveness for a few weeks now, but I am so happy to bring you up to date with the final decisions I have made!

Remember, my dining room started out looking like this.

And my living room looked like this.

After coming home from being gone all summer, I rearranged the furniture to this.

After weeks of not being happy, I decided to swap the furniture.  Today the furniture placement looks like this!

I flipped the two rooms.   The dining room is the focal point when you walk in the front door now.

The smaller area ended up being the perfect little cozy space for my chair and chaise.

I ended up deciding on these 2 fabrics for my curtains and ottoman.  Thank you JoAnne’s  for your Columbus Day Sale, a great 50% off sale!  I chose a more traditional fabric and adding a more contemporary fabric to the ottoman, these fabrics used together will help create a transitional decorating styled room.

Eventhough I LOVE this fabric,  I just just couldn’t get past the raccoon tails!   Thanks Hayley!

I am pleased to announce my handyman will be home in about 50 days now!  Can’t wait, he has some work to do to totally finish up this room!  The chandelier has to be swapped, pictures need to be hung, curtain rods need to be rehung to 108 inches, and 6 beautiful tufted, linen chairs need to be put together!  I returned the other dining room chair, it was the wrong color gray!  imagine that!

Along with a never ending honey do list!  I think I deserve a pat on my back, as anxious as I am to update and decorate this house, I have been very patient as my husband focuses on this deployment.  Patience is not one of my strengths, especially if it has to do with recreating and decorating my house!!

You know I love your feedback!  So what do you think about the changes?  I love the dining room table and linen chairs as the focal point, what about you?

Oh no she didn’t!

Oh no she didn’t!

Oh yes I did!  And I couldn’t be happier!

You remember when I blogged about my living room chaise here and I could not figure out what the heck to do with the back of the chaise?

Well I decided what to do!  I decided to paint the chaise.  YIKES!!  I can hear some of you gasping right now, but really, it’s ok!  I love it already and it is only primed!

I have tested a few colors but haven’t made a decision on how to exactly finish it!  When my new rugs came in, I immediately knew that in order for my living room makeover to have the decorator’s look I envisioned, I had to paint some furniture!  The chaise had to match other home decor items that I want to use that will complete the look.  I want it to be simple and classy, nothing loud and crazy!

This living room makeover has taken longer than expected!  With David being deployed and us in the full swing of school, sports, and other extra curricular activities, my time at home has become limited!  My time for blogging and home DIY projects are even more limited!

Painted furniture seems to be the big trend right now.  Be sure to check out my pinterest board for great ideas on how to paint furniture and to find inspirational photos.

How do you like painted furniture in your home?  How do you like the chaise painted?  Maybe I should even upholster it?

Home again!

Home again!

I am back home after visiting David in Europe for 2 weeks. It was a great time and I hated leaving him, knowing he was flying back to Afghanistan where everyday is “groundhog day”, as he calls it.  He sure wanted to come home!

When I first found out that he was going to be TDY (business trip) to Germany, Belgium, and England for 2 weeks, I was so thrilled that I was going to get to go and travel all over Europe!

Well that really did not happen. The military posts that we stayed at were really not in a Metropolitan area, and heaven forbid the walk from Chievres, Belgium to civilization would have taken quite some time!

Chievres is in the country!

I was thinking it would be like living in Seoul, Korea and being able to walk out any gate and BAM, welcome to the city!

However Mons was about 20 minutes away and we went to the town square several times for dinner.

As much as I was hoping to sight see during the day while Dave was working, I was really satisfied just hanging at the military lodge all day, sleeping until mid morning or later, you know, no where to be and no time to be there! It felt great and was relaxing!  It made my time with David more valuable and reminded me when were were first married and could lounge around all day, we sure do miss those days!!

We spent our two weeks bouncing back and forth from Belgium, Germany, and England. David and I were able to go into Cambridge and London, LOVED both.

We went punting down the Cam river in Cambridge.

Our day trip into London was amazing, hot and crowded!  We ended up spending much of the day on this bus, touring the many historical sights.

And of course 2 of my favorites!  The UGG and Juicy Couture taxi cabs!  I just love them!

While we were in Germany, we were able to have dinner with some friends that we have known for over 15 years, LTC Ken Gillam and his wife, Jennifer.  Dave and Ken were platoon leaders  together at Fort Stewart once upon a time and both attended the Advance Course at Fort Knox.  We had a great time catching up.  One thing about the Army, you never know when or how you come in full circle with friends from years earlier.  It is important to never burn any bridges!

Coming back home was bittersweet. I am happy to be home again, home with the girls, and definitely being able to sleep in my own bed!  I also miss David.  We are going to dig deep inside and rely on our inner strength to make it through these next 3 months.  It is like I told David, we ARE Team Hoffs, we can do anything!  We are going to wake up each day, with our chin up, best foot forward, and take it one day at a time!  That’s the best we can do and that is how you make it through a deployment!

Breaking News!

Breaking News!

As I am sitting here starting to write another post , I am listening to the news, reporting on the possible threat Iran has on the US and Israel and how US military posts in Afganistan could be blown away within minutes if Iran were to retaliate!  My heart literally dropped!

Father God Please protect my husband!  His safety is in your hands.

This is NOT what you want to hear on the news when your husband is in Afganistan and he promises he is in a “safe” area!!   Safe being relative!  I know that is David’s way of reassuring me that he is ok, but he is in Afganistan, how safe is safe?  I mean within seconds something like this with Iran can happen.  And it is scary!

My heart goes out to the many wives that have lost their husbands during this war!  I just can’t even imagine!   I don’t know what I would do if…

I planned to blog about my first month without my husband but I decided to write about what I am feeling right now!  I don’t think there are words to even describe how military spouses feel every single day that we have our husbands deployed!  We look around and life goes on for everyone.  Even though we make the best of each day, David is missed, he is a HUGE part of our family and it just hurts to even think about what if!

As you go about celebrating the 4th of July, just remember to pray for the safety of our troops and my husband.  And pray for the families that are waiting each day for them to return home!

I’m Such A Bad Mom!

I’m Such A Bad Mom!

or AM I?

The day that David deployed was a very emotional day!  I have to admit, I did not handle it as well as I thought I would!  David and I decided to just drop him off at the airport and say our goodbyes rather than getting a security pass and staying with him an additional 2 hours!  The anticipation of him leaving was at an all time high, waiting any longer would have been detrimental to my mental health!  If you have experienced anything similar, you know exactly what I am talking about!  Sometimes it is best to just say goodbye and GO!

We woke up that morning and both girls had decided to go on to school.  Gabby wanted to go and take her AR tests (what a committed student) and Hayley had to take exams (even though the school would have worked with us).  Gabby woke up extremely early that morning, which is rare, she is always sneaking a sleep in until the very last minute.  I knew immediately when she was up so early that it was going to be a rough day.  I encouraged her to go get in the bed with daddy and get some early morning snugs!!  Eventually the 2 of them were up and she was determined to go to school.  So being the supportive mom that I am, I went along with this decision, even though I reassured her she could stay home!  The time came for her to go to the bus stop, so her daddy took her.  Because David is so organized and is the “has it all together parent” of the 2, he got to the bus stop with a few minutes to spare.   However this is very unusual for me as many mornings my fellow neighborhood moms look out for us and flag the bus down as we drive up and it’s about to drive off!  I wonder if he would have gotten different results if she literally had to jump and run to catch the bus that morning!  Meanwhile I am at home on the computer, either on facebook or working on my blog, because that is how I escape these days!  As I am getting Hayley up for school, David and Gabby return home.  Both are blubbering and I knew, we were in for a long hard day!  Gabby just could not say goodbye to her daddy.  Now David is a strong man, he does not show much emotion about too much, however when it comes to his wife and girls, that grown man can break your heart!  We got it together (temporarily) and managed to get Hayley ready for the bus.  Our sweet and entertaining  neighbor-daughter, Emma, who likes for us to refer to her as our 3rd child, comes over each morning to walk with Hayley to the bus stop.  When it came time for Hayley to leave for the bus, she was stopped dead in her tracks by emotion and we decided that David would take them to school.  Poor Emma!  She experienced first hand the sadness and grief that military families feel when moms and dads are deployed!  We all had our family hug, tears a flowing, ugly face cries, and me reassuring how strong we are, we are TEAM HOFFS  for heaven’s sake and we would be ok!   It took awhile to get it together and David took Hayley and Emma to school. Hayley is our quiet  and reserved child, she knew it would be easier for her to just go to school and get it over with than dragging it out all day!   And Emma was given clear directions to take care of Hayley!

The morning slowly passed and David, Gabby and I drove to the airport.  I had been mentally preparing myself all morning to be strong and not to lose it at the airport!   As it is time for him to say “goodbye”, we all 3 had a wave of emotion that still rocks me to the core!  Talk about ugly faces!  Usually I bury my face in my hands to keep from exposing that ugly face cry!  But at that moment, I did not care!!  I am sure we were a sight to see!  Here we are outside the airport, just a boo-hooing and bystanders watching and I am sure feeling our emotion!  I am sure with David being in uniform and the 10 bags he had to check, everyone had to KNOW we were a family of a Deployed soldier!  The rest of the afternoon is a blur, I just remember Gabby rubbing my back saying “Mom, it is ok, we are TEAM HOFFS!”  Wow I needed to hear that!

The day drug by and Hayley returned from school.  We decided to indulge ourself with some good ole comfort food!!!  So dinner time came and we decided that CRACKER BARREL was the place to go!  The whole atmosphere at Cracker Barrel is just what we needed!  Warmth, coziness, and CANDY!!

And what better choice of comfort food is there than our favorite-chicken and dumplings!!

Now I have to tell  you, I am not a mom who lets my girls just eat a lot of junk food and candy!  I am a mom of moderation, however I did let my girls indulge that night!  We all did!! The lesson that I wanted to teach my girls is that it is ok to feel sadness, it is ok to have a night of indulgence , but TOMORROW is a new day, and we will put our best foot forward and move on!  We went to bed that night, woke up the next day feeling like we could conquer the world because we are TEAM HOFFS, we can do anything!

I wonder though, did I teach them to go to food for comfort or did I teach them that some times us girls just need a night of indulgence and it’s ok, but we must move on?   Just another thing for me to stress about!  What do you think?
