DIY board and batten tutorial

DIY board and batten tutorial

Hey Ya’ll!

Are you ready for a small DIY home project that David has been busy on?  We had started this bathroom makeover a while ago by ripping out the bathroom vanity and adding a new vanity.     Because the bathroom is small and had this long wall, I’ve been researching for small bathroom ideas and current bathroom trends that would really add something to this boring bathroom.

But before I get into that, I have to start this post off with a funny little story , “you know you are getting old, when…”

I had a couple of friends come visit me this weekend.  I get a text from one yesterday wanting to see pictures of  the board and batten that I showed you in BOARD with my Bath.  I get a text today from her looking for the tutorial to the board and batten, and I kept directing her back to my blog.  She insisted that it was not there, so I come to look it up for her, even linking the post to facebook just so she could see it.  As I am reading the post, I realize that the tutorial was never published!  I had set this post to be published in April instead of March and never even realized that it had not been published yet!

So you know you are getting old when you can’t even keep up with what you are blogging about! HA!

Now onto this post that was written a few weeks ago by David!

On my way to a modern kitchen

On my way to a modern kitchen

Hey ya’ll!  We have a modern kitchen…almost.

I’m happy to report that we have completed another DIY project!  You know I love white kitchens, but I needed something to warm it up a bit and have more of a modern kitchen feel.

We’re on Spring Break this week and have been busy with finishing up projects, especially little miss sunshine’s bedroom.  I can’t wait to show you her bedroom, you’ll just have to wait.  :-)

Even though I loved my white kitchen, it was just a little too bright.white kitchens, modern kitchen

It ended up taking longer than we expected, but it has been sanded, repainted, re-sanded, re-sanded some more, primed and repainted.   It was a torcherous DIY project, but so glad we did it.modern kitchen

Happy New Year!

I’m ready to start this year off trying to organize my home.  I shared with you how I lack organizational skills, so this year I am going to declutter once and for all, and I need your help to keep me on task, motivated, and to share your most valued tips that you use to help you organize!   We all do better at achieving our goals when we have a buddy, so I am looking for organizational buddies!

How to frame a builder grade bathroom mirror

How to frame a builder grade bathroom mirror

Are you ready to see what you can do to a plain bathroom mirror?
I have a treat for all of you today and her name is Kayla, from Whatever is Lovely.  She is such a cutie, and when I put a shout out needing help from guest bloggers, she was right there wanting to help!
I welcome Kayla and ask that you all show her  all that wonderful Recreate and Decorate love!
Hello! I’m Kayla from Whatever is Lovely.  I’m so happy and honored to be guest posting today at Recreate and Decorate!
I haven’t been blogging for very long, but when I found Wanda’s blog, I was hooked! :)
A few months ago, I gave my master bathroom  mirror a makeover, and I’d like to share how we framed out our builder grade bathroom mirror.
Here is a before picture of the large bathroom mirror and Hollywood lighting.

I found how to frame the mirror with crown molding from this insprational blog, Full of great ideas.
Here are the before and after pictures from Full of Great Ideas.

So, the husband and I went to Home Depot and bought all of the molding we needed.  It ended up costing right around $30.
Yes, $30!
And it made a huge difference. See?

Now. I won’t lie to you. This project ended up being a huge pain to finish.
I normally always buy pre-primed molding, but none of the molding we needed for this came primed.  And I don’t want to toot my own horn too much, but I am a pretty good spray-painter.  But it is really, really tough to spray paint this kind of crown molding!! It has that very intricate design on it and the paint just didn’t go on in the nice, smooth way that I’m used to it going on.  But, it’s really not noticeable unless you stare at the molding, so it’s alright. I guess ;)
But yes, a coat of primer and three coats of white spray paint later, it was time to make our cuts. Those weren’t easy either.  Fortunately, the way our bathroom is set up we didn’t have to worry about finishing off the sides of the crown. That would have been even harder; and frankly, I don’t even want to think about that right now. Ha!
Then, we had to nail the crown molding piece to the wide, flat molding (go see the post I linked to above if you can’t picture what I mean).
So after all the painting and cutting and nailing was done, it was just a matter of using Liquid Nails to apply the molding to the mirror.
I squirted it on and held the pieces in place with blue painter’s tape to make sure they didn’t slide off while it was drying.
Then the next morning,  my bathroom mirror was all done.

Thanks so much for reading and I would love for you to come visit me at

Anyone plan to add crown molding around your contractor grade  bathroom mirror?  I am, in fact we are going to frame in both large bathroom mirrors in our master bath when we get to that project.  I can’t wait.
Thank you Kayla for a wonderful diy bathroom project.
Now make sure you visit Kayla and let her know you were here!

How to decorate a tween girl bathroom

How to decorate a tween girl bathroom

Decorating a tween girl bathroom can be so much fun, especially when your tween is eager to participate in their bathroom design.   Hayley and Gabby have started giving me decorating ideas with this house and I love it. Up until now, they have not shown much interest in any type of home decor so I was excited when they told me they picked out a Roxy bath ensemble!  I was even more excited when they told me they wanted matching bright pink bathroom accessories!  Did they say PINK??  I remember jumping on the bright pink bandwagon and quickly buying up the bathroom decor before they could even change their mind!  I love pink and they had given up pink a few years ago!  No way was I gonna pass up this opportunity.  Bathroom design 101 time!

I bought the Roxy shower curtain, toothbrush holder, soap dispenser, and hand towels.  I used solid bright pink towels and bright pink bathroom rugs.  I just love this Roxy Go See Dots bathroom decor set.  I love the bright colors, the polka dots, and the striped hand towels!  This combination is very hip and chic, and a very popular choice with tween girls.

Hayley and Gabby made this artwork.  I like to personalize spaces in my home.  To me, personalized home decor makes our home feel more like we belong their.

DIY bathroom home improvement

I found this flip flop art at TJMAXX.  I thought it was fitting with the Roxy Decor.

We used brown floating shelves from Target to store the towels on. This is a great idea for additional storage if you have a small bathroom.  Not only are shelves great for storage, but they are a great way to add a modern decor look to any space.

When we first moved into this house, the girl’s bathroom was pretty much an outdated mess, lacking and bathroom designed look.   David tore out the old vanity and the large mirror, added a new, all wood,  36′  Birch Palencia Bath Vanity by Allen + Roth and matching mirror from Lowe’s.  We chose the espresso color vanity with a solid white marble counter top to give the bathroom a modern look.  We chose the Allen + Roth white cultured Marble vanity top with square sink.  We also added chrome cabinet hardware, a faucet, hand towel ring, and light fixture to complete the contemporary look we wanted.

So there you have it, my ideas for decorating a tween girl bathroom!  I think it looks very hip!  What do you think?
