Adding Thrift store chic to your home decorating style!

Adding Thrift store chic to your home decorating style!

“ What the heck is Thrift store chic?  And is that even a home decorating style?”
You bet it is, and it is becoming one of my most favorite interior design styles of all!

Thrift store chic has become a very popular home decorating style.  You may even describe it as being vintage, rustic, or antique.  Whichever term you choose, it is a great inexpensive way to add character or charm to your home by shopping at consignment stores or second hand stores.

That character or charm is what makes your friends say “ooohh lala” when they walk in the front door!  It’s what makes your home different from any other.  And that’s a good thing.

I love a treasure hunt!  I mean I absolutely love going on treasure hunts, especially at my local consignment stores or thrift shops like the Salvation Army, or flea markets.

I know, some of you are turning your nose up right now, but that’s ok.
And yes, I buy treasures and I use them in my home, *gasp!

I’m telling ya, it’s part of my home decorating style and I love it.
I have even been known to buy shoes, purses, or even clothes if I find a really good high end deal.
Shhh, my girls don’t know that, they would be so embarrassed if they knew!

Remember,” it’s not about where you buy it, it’s how you use it!”

Oh and using that Coach bag from the thrift store with a pair of Miss Me jeans,  a cute top, great shoes, and some vintage jewelry has now made me feel like I got to go strutting around like I just stepped out of vogue magazine.

Just like using that great piece of furniture that you have recreated into something spectacular, has now made you want to host that party you have been thinking about for some time now.
Picture frames, lamps, old window frames and wood furniture are just a few things that can be recreated  or repurposed into something current for your home.

Here is a brass lamp that I bought at the Flea Market for $2 .50.   I  bought the pair for 5 bucks!  I know, big splurge right!!

I spray painted them both yellow for my dining room and living room makeover that I just completed.  They give the room that pop of color that I love so much!

Why add thrift store finds to your home decorating style?
Because it’s fun,  funky, and is definitely cheap!

And when recreated or repurposed, these treasures can add drama or be a focal point in your room.
Like this bold beauty.  It’s got to catch your attention when you walk in the front door!

For those of us who like the newest home decor trends, but don’t want to spend the bucks for it, buying a piece of furniture from a second hand store is perfect!  I would not want to spend the money on a mellow yellow accent piece because in a few years, I may be into purple or something!

Who knows, we could even move again and not have the space for it!
Maybe you need a dresser for a bedroom, media console for your your large flat screen, or just a little something to brighten up a room.

It’s amazing what paint and new hardware can do to an old piece of wood furniture!

Check out this before and after by all things thrifty.   Amazing!
and she got that piece so cheap!  Only 40 bucks people!

How about this beautiful white dresser.  I would love this in my guest room

Have I ever told you I have had so much damage done to my home decor and furniture throughout the years of moving.  If a treasure gets damaged, it doesn’t hurt as bad as a quality piece of brand new furniture!
The one thing that I have learned that I will never do again, ship my quality furniture overseas.   Never again!  I know, never say never, but that is one lesson I learned the hard way!
Next time we move overseas, (if there is a next time) I will make sure I send my great thrift store chic treasures.

  1. Popped in from SITS! I have two brass lamps that exact style and color and hated the brass…I love the pale yellow idea!

    • So glad you like the yellow! I used spray paint for brass and metal, very easy to do, just tape off the cord with painters tape. There are so many spray paint colors out there for metal! I love spray paint!

  2. WOW! I just popped in from SITS and love your ideas! I never thought of painting metal!

    • Oh Michelle you are missing out! Lol
spray paint is my best friend! It comes in so many colors for metal, brass, and for plastic too! Pretty much anything can be spray painted!

  3. Great post Wanda – love the lamps! I have purchased many things at the local thrift store…I will be in Florida in the next couple of weeks and doing some thrifting is on my list of things to do!

  4. I am a HUGE fan of thrifting (I’m actually going to be featuring some of my favorited thrifted home goods on my blog on Friday!), and I absolutely love what you did with the lamps. You can find some amazing finds, and with a little bit of spray paint and some ingenuity you make something dull and lifeless into something beautiful and interesting without spending a lot of money.

  5. I’ve never gone thrifting before, but would definitely give it a try after reading your post! It’s amazing how just a little paint can transform the whole look of something. Love the bright yellow paint you used on the lamps. They look fabulous!

  6. Hi Wanda,
Thank you so much for featuring my white dresser. That’s so sweet of you.

  7. I love thrifting! My current fads are white porcelain pitchers, toy sewing machines, and vintage suitcases. (I don’t have room for furniture right now.) Happy Saturday!

  10. Love these ideas! I’ve done thrift, consignment, and yard sales and I’ve walked away feeling really good about how I spent my money. I’m stopping by from SITS and I can’t help but admire how well you’ve put together your post–great pictures, great take-aways, and you featured other people’s ideas as well. The aesthetic of your blog is great too. I’ll bookmark it not only for your posts, but on how to put together a well-done blog.

  11. Love the yellow lamps! I would say that my style is transitional with a mix of organic and industrial–is that even a thing? Off to explore some more!! Happy SITS Day!

    • yes that is a thing! I love industrial too and mixing it with transitional keeps it warm and inviting. Great choice of style!

  12. I love this! Mom and I used to go junkin’ all the time to revamp our home. As a matter of fact, I still do. But I live so far away from most stores I have to plan special days. Visiting from SITS and loving your blog! I will most definitely be back!

  15. Those pieces look great! I love shopping at thrift stores! My mom oce rescued a buffet that was fire damaged and painted it and it looks great!

  16. I’m stopping by from Sits, too. We have so much in common I was hoping you were going to be closer to me. Alas, I am in Northeast Ohio and you are in the Tampa area. Maybe one day we can meet in Hilton Head and go thrifting together.

I love to make over old pieces I find at thrift shops, on the side of the road, or get out of my grandparent’s barn. No matter, it’s fun to take it from some old thing nobody wants anymore to something everyone gets excited about. You have inspired me to get something done today!

  17. Love your use of color! I just adore bold color and after living in the desert for a few years, I told my husband: No more brown! Now we have a red wall in the living room and a chartreuse green guest bathroom. It’s fun. But I also really like how you marry color with your own style. Wish I had that kind of creativity gene! Enjoy your SITS Day. What a pleasure to find your blog!

    • I agree NO MORE BROWN! color can be so much fun and add so much to your decor. No need to be creative, my blog is all about sharing these great ideas! ;-)

  18. I love the colors you have used. I’m not a fan of yellow, but it is growing on me. Daffodils and sunflowers are so beautiful. Enjoy your SITS Day and your adventures in sleuthing out the deals.

  19. I love going to yard and estate sales to find hidden treasures. My goal this summer is to go to my first thrift store and buy some clothes…

Great post LOVE the yellow lamps!

  20. What a difference some paint makes. I love how your lamps turned out! They’re lovely.

  21. The white dresser is gorgeous and you’re right it is absolutely how you use the items not where you find them and I believe accessorizing makes all the difference in the world.

    Happy SITS Day!

  24. All of these projects turned out beautiful! I love when you can find a great buy at the thrift store and turn it into something great again!
