Dear Dining Room…

Dear Dining Room…

Dear Dining Room,

You know how special each piece of furniture is to me, some of you came all the way from your homes in South East Asia to live with me.  I handpicked each of you with a particular look in mind!  You are an important piece of our story, you represent an area and many memories of where we have lived!

Dining Room table, you are one of my favorite pieces of all of my home decor furniture.  I love how you are made of solid teak and come from Bali.  I love how diverse you are!  Your color is beautiful and you show off your wood grain perfectly!  I can use you forever and mix you with all types of decorating styles.  Right now, you are being used in a transitional decor style, but as I get older, I can continue to use you if I decide to be more traditional, and my daughters will be able to use you one day if they choose a Contemporary style.

When we moved into this house, you and your dear friend, Living Room,  were combined into one very large room and I needed to get you out of the boxes and your home decor items displayed because you are the first room our guests see when they walk in the front door!  However, I was so overwhelmed with the amount of updating the house needed, I just decorated you with my existing home decor items to recreate you once again!  You were pretty enough for me to move on and focus more time and money into rooms that had to be totally madeover!.  Please forgive me for not giving you the detailed attention that you truly needed and deserved!  What I have planned to do is give you a new dining room makeover!  I plan to replace the dark rug that you are sitting on with one not as dark, a rug that is more contemporary and stylish.  Maybe something like these from Overstock.com

I also plan to replace the ugly white and peach slippery ceramic tile floor that makes you look so outdated and sterile, with beautiful  dark Hardwood floors.  This will make a huge difference in how you look and feel, and I am sure that we both will be very happy with the outcome!  You will be looking very hip and current when I am done!

Dining Room chairs, you are probably the most upset with me for seperating you and the other four chairs. I decided to use them in our bright and airy kitchen area! You may even be a little jealouse that they get used so much more than you do.  I am very sorry, and I am looking for you a very good home that can give you the attention that you need!  You deserve a better life!  You were great for our home in Hawaii, but now you are just not right for the dining room and a bit smaller than what I need.  Your contemporary style is perfect for a dining room that is not as dark as mine!  I hope you are used in a bright and cheerful space so that your dark color can help the room feel anchored!  You were just too dark for the new house because you had to be used with more dark furniture than before!  I am sorry!  I really like these from Restoration Hardware, they are more formal, elegant, and of course much ligher in color.  And I love the tufted backs!

Teak bookcase, I really love you!  I just wish you were larger so I could use you for a real china cabinet!  I have always found the perfect spot for you and displayed items inside that complemented your look and style!  You too are very well made and solid teak.  You came from Thailand, my favorite country EVER!  I plan to get you fixed, the moving company broke a drawer and we are still waiting for it to get settled!  I know it has been almost a year, but Covan moving company just don’t want to take responsibility for breaking you.  I promise you will be fixed and no one will ever know that you were damaged.  You have had some serious moves, one from Korea to Hawaii and the other from Hawaii to Florida.  I am very happy that is the only damage you have received!  You will continue to be a part of the dining room, I am just not sure where you will be placed!

This chandelier is a new addition.  I love the chrome and white shades!  It is very modern and will help bring the entire room together!  I have a white monogrammed table runner from Pottery Barn that I just realized was not being used!  I will have to find it and use it.  The white is a great contrast with the dark wood.    I will replace the mirror with a much larger round mirror and pair it with a sideboard.  Something similar to this dining room photo by A Well Dressed Home.

I think you will be a beautiful room when I am done.  I think you will be a stunning first impression to our guests.  We plan to add crown molding as well.   When I am done, you will be a perfect blend of traditional and contemporary decorating styles!

I am still trying to decide on which rug to use!  I would love to know which is your pick!  What are your ideas for this room?

Home Away from Home

Home Away from Home

I feel so blessed to have been able to spend time this summer at our home away from home with my parents.  My parents have a cozy log cabin up in the mountains of North Carolina.  My mom is the administrator of a non profit Christain ministry that hosts summer camps for children, teens and college and career.  We have had the pleasure of coming here for many years, mostly spending summers while David would be away or when we were in between moves.  We literally have stayed here for an entire summer while we have been homeless!  We have come to know and love the families that work for the ministry and enjoy being loved on while we are here.  And I LOVE being loved on and having people LOVE on my girls!  And of course this year is no different, I am enjoying the love that we are shown and the support that we have received with David being deployed!

This summer has been an amazing visit and a time of rest for me.  The mountains are always so peaceful to me and the view at my parents home is absolutely amazing!  I get to sleep at night by listening to the rushing waterfalls in the background.  Can you say HEAVEN!!

AND I sleep through the night here!  WooHoo because that is major for me!   There is just something about being at mama and daddy’s, no matter how old I am!

David is doing very well in Afganistan.  I am very thankful for today’s technology and how we are able to facetime daily IF his wifi connection is working!  We have some challenges with the connection, but most days we get to “see” David and that really helps, even if it takes 4 or 5 attempts!  He is working a lot, 18 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I guess David’s rest is not a priority during war!

Thank you to those of you who have left me facebook comments, comments on my blog, and sent me emails to show your support for my family, husband and the Military.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!  Please continue to pray for our troops and for my husband’s safety.

Fun, festive decor ideas for July 4th!

Fun, festive decor ideas for July 4th!

July Fourth is one of my favorite celebrations, and it is just around the corner!

We always have friends over and enjoy a day of hanging out, grilling, and fireworks.  And of course sporting our red, white, and blue attire!

I always like to add some festive decor to the food and main table!  However I like simple decor, I am a ”less is best” kind of girl!  But that is just a personal preference.   Here are a few decorating ideas that will add some festive flair to your July 4th party that you may be planning.

TomKAt Studio shares this awesome July 4th table scape. july 4th

I love the bubblegum in the apothecary jar!  You can add any candy that you may like, just keep it festive with red, white, or blue!  The homemade blue and white polka dot placemats are perfect and adds a little something special to the table.  The small flower arrangements are simple to make, just use some type of small jar, add carnations, and you can even tie ribbon around the jar.

This is a great way to use your geranium flowers!  Add small American flags and a red, white, and blue checkered or plaid tablecloth and use with your red and white dishes.

Here is a very simple but modern way to bring in the red, white and blue.  I love the blue and white geometrical tablecloth paired with red and white dishes.  This is very simple, but yet very festive!  If this is too simple, just add a few small American Flags to the green fern and a ribbon around the pail.  That will add some pizzazz if needed!  However, I really like the simplicity of it.

 Fancy Frugal Life

This is one of my favorite desserts to fix.  I have fixed this for so many Army functions we have attended.  It is easy to make, very patriotic, and the kids love it!  The stars add that festive flair to this dessert!

*Pint of Strawberries
*Pint of Blueberries
*Loaf of Sara Lee Pound Cake
*Star cookie cutter
*Whip Cream
Just use a star cookie cutter to cut the stars and then add all ingedients into a trifle bowl.
I hope this will give you some ideas or inspire you to have a festive 4th of July celebration!

Decorating a tween girl bathroom

Decorating a tween girl bathroom

Decorating a tween girl bathroom can be so much fun, especially when your tween is eager to participate in their bathroom design.

Hayley and Gabby have started giving me decorating ideas with this house and I love it. Up until now, they have not shown much interest in any type of home decor so I was excited when they told me they picked out a Roxy bath ensemble!  I was even more excited when they told me they wanted matching bright pink bathroom accessories!Continue reading

Is it a Wolf or an Eagle?

Good lord I woke up this morning realizing I had the craziest dream last night!  A few weeks back I posted Out with the Old and in with the Blue, and my funny friend Sharon Steele, left me this comment, “Is it weird that I see faces in damask?  I can’t have it in my house.  We have one lampshade that has a damask pattern and all I see is an eagle and a wolf LOOKING AT ME when I see it.  Creeeepy”

about this shower curtain. I laughed and thought “I should blog about that!” You never know what you may say, do, or comment that may show up on here!  I am sure after spending a week with some of my family, about 10 of us, something we were “hootin’ and a hollerin”  about will make it on here as well!  Anyway so I dreamed about the images in the damask print last night!  Crazy!  I know, right!  And I just knew it was time to blog about it!  I have looked at this print all morning to try to find that wolf or eagle, but it is just not there, not for me anyway!  Instead I see a peacock, an owl, and a Tribal Warrior’s painted face! My two daughters and nephew, Zach, tell me that Sharon and I are crazy, that all they see is a blue shower curtain with white flowers!  So I just got to know, what do you see!
