Master bedroom, My Suite Escape!

Master bedroom, My Suite Escape!

I am so excited to show you our master bedroom!  It was one of those rooms that I really did not have a clear vision for, therefore its a bedroom that I thought, I will just get to later!  I  kinda added home decor accessories here and there, no rhyme or reason to anything,  I figured I would make sense of my master bedroom later.  I really was just adding things to keep it from being an empty room!  I think that it turned out beautiful and it is one of my favorite rooms ever!  I think it is a true example of transitional decorating style.  Hopefully you will get some decorating tips from this master bedroom!

Master bedroom

When it was first painted, I freaked out and text my sister immediately, “it is too baby blue, it is suppose to be gray”!  She kept responding with “I am sure it looks great!”  Oh my, baby blue was not what I had in my head, I had gray, a pretty light shade of gray!  I have to warn you, if you are picking out gray paint colors, know that they can read purple or blue!!  Even though I tested a LARGE sample on all the walls before it was painted, (actually tested about 5 colors before picking this one) it STILL turned out more baby blue than gray!  I was horrified and my husband was REFUSING to paint it again!  He kept saying, “just leave it up for a few days, and you will like it!”  After I had time to catch my breath and realize we still had A LOT of painting left to do, I decided to just leave it and just see what happens.   One day became a few days, which became a week!  To be honest, it is my favorite color in the whole house!  Some days it is gray, some days it is baby blue.  But it don’t matter, IT IS WHAT IT IS and I LOVE it!  I just made sure that most of the home decor accessories were a true gray!  I just love the white comforter set mixed in with it!  The whole room is very relaxing, even my girls love to be in there!!  Now if I could just actually SLEEP through the night, it would be perfect!!

Lesson to be learned:  don’t freak out and panic if a room is the wrong color, live with it a day or so and see what happens!!!  So Glad I did!!

Look what I “RECREATED”

Look what I “RECREATED”

Not too long ago, my youngest daughter, Gabby, surprised the snot out of me when we were in Claire’s at the mall.  She was shopping with her gift cards that she had received.  She was looking around and all of a sudden she sees head bands, pretty head bands, head bands with big flowers on them!  I was stunned!  Probably even speechless!! (yes I have had a few speechless moments in my life!)  You see I was that mom who LOVED hair bows and, my girls wore them a lot when they were younger, but as they got older, I had to give up that control and allow them to wear their hair the way they wanted!  And what did they want to do with it? NOTHING!!!!  Just brush it (sometimes) and go!  My oldest will put her hair in a ponytail from time to time, or even wear hair bows!  (ATTENTION MOMS:  hold on to to those big hair bows, your daughter will come back to them in 6th grade!!!)   Gabby has beautiful, long, blonde hair and she likes for it to be down, no hair clip, no hair bow, nothing!  So you can imagine how stunned I was when she was excited to see the headbands and was actually picking out the ones that she wanted!  This mama was in HEAVEN!!   I am a girly mom, and my girls have become somewhat “less girly” than I anticipated!   We came home that night with about 5 head bands and I think Gabby has worn one in her hair every day since!!  WOO HOO!!!

I had come across this head band craft project a while ago, but just oohed over the thought of it, thinking how fun it would be to make and be able to use!  I came across it again a few days ago and knew we had to make it!  Gabby’s bedroom is somewhat a hawaiian/surfer style bedroom (we moved here from Hawaii) so I found this cute hawaiian fabric from Jo Anne’s that matches her room.  Hawaiian or surfer fabric is not easy to find here in FL!  I ran to Walmart and bought the large container of oatmeal, the Great Value brand worked for me!

I came home and within 15 minutes, I RECREATED  a project and made this!   How cute is that!!

Here is what you need

1/2 yard of fabric

Large oatmeal container

hot glue gun

mod podge/ glue

3/8 inch ribbon

scissors

artificial flowers

What I did:

Cut the fabric a little larger than the container   I then used LOCTITE spray adhesive and sprayed the container with the adhesive.  Mod Podge will work as well.

I then wrapped the fabric tightly around the container.  You could use gift wrapping paper as well.  Just make sure it is darker or thick enough or you will be able to see the print from the oatmeal container through the paper.   I trimmed the fabric to fit the container.  I added 3/8″ of ribbon to to the top and bottom of the fabric covered container to cover any frayed fabric.  I then hot glued artificial hibiscus flowers to the top of the plastic lid.  I used 4 flowers because they were large.

I then added head bands and TA DA!   15 minutes later, I have this!!

A cute head band holder!  PLUS storage (inside the container) for all the clips and bows that I bought that she may decide to wear, one day!   (fingers crossed) Now we get to see just how long Gabby will actually use this!

I found several different sites that have posted this project.  Check them out because they will show you different ideas!  Thanks Ladies!!

the real housewife is a good one to visit too.  She uses a roll of paper towels instead of the oatmeal container!

Do you plan to make one?  I want to know!!

HOME SWEET HOME

HOME SWEET HOME

I was able to go HOME this weekend, my real home, and that would be Cairo, Ga.  That little south Ga town is about 20 miles north of Tallahassee, Fl.   Yes that is South GA!  I left Cairo about 18 years ago, and have only gone back to visit, a handful of times.  We were thrilled when the ARMY gave us FL as an option for us to move to, because I was so homesick and ready to be close to Home.   It is true, you can take the girl out of the south, but you can’t take the south out of the girl!  I have been missing my southern roots, including sweet tea, riding down dirt roads, hearing the words ya’ll and fixin’ to,  getting eat up by chiggers, hanging at the local Walmart to socialize with all my hometown friends, and the fine dining experience at the local Mr. Chick!!

My youngest nephew, Zach, graduated from High School on Friday, YAY ZACH!!  so my whole family came to celebrate!  What a great family weekend we had!  We have not all been able to spend a weekend together in quite some time.  It was nice to have my parents, sister and brother in law, my 3 nephews, 2 nieces, and the most special guest of all, Tristan, my great nephew, who deserves his own very special post because he is our miracle baby, yes a true miracle!

Here is Tristan, isn’t he just the cutest batman ever!!

My sister, the graduate, Zach, and brother in law

Caleb and ZachBrandon, Teri, Zach, and Caleb

And all the 2012 CHS graduates!  Congratulations to all of you!

I have several “must do’s” while visiting Cairo, and one of them is eating at the local mom and pop’s fried chicken joint, Mr. Chick.  I was doubled blessed this time, we ate there twice in one weekend!!  I love some Mr. Chick, especially that fried chicken breast sandwich that has the BONE in it!  My family gives me grief but as my mama says, that bone makes it taste so much better!  And their sweet tea is the best sweet tea in the South!  Not only is it the best fried chicken in Georgia, it is the best place to go and hang (other than Walmart) to see old friends!

(Hey Chick, I forgot to take a picture of that chicken breast sandwich, how about sending me one so I can post it and you are welcome for that free ad!  or you can always share this blog to your facebook page! that would be great-HA!)

So if you ever go down to that neck of the woods, you got to stop by

Lucky me, my sister had just had her home painted and was wanting me to help her with some home decor ideas!  WHAT!!  I jumped at the chance and quickly jumped into home decorator mode!  I think we did a great job, just recreating and decorating by rearranging her furniture and using home decor accessories that she already had.  We ran out of time but here are some of the pictures of what it looked like before and after.  It is still a work in progress, I left her with some great home decorating ideas on how to finish the space and, I think it will look great once she gets it finished!  Sorry for the poor quality photos, photographer was not listed on my job description in ABOUT ME!  But I admit, I must get better! HA!

We did a switcharoo with the cabinet and bookcase (pictured above) from the back wall, and switched them with a smaller cabinet (pictured below) that was on the back wall in the dining room.  The dining room wall is quite large so the 2 cabinets balanced it out while the smaller cabinet was the perfect balance for the smaller wall in the family room.  Here is a picture of the after, we added the home decor accessories to the top, including a large vase with tall greenery, we needed this to be tall because of the high ceiling.   She plans to get a chair and ottoman to group with the small cabinet to balance out that wall.

Think SCALE!! Her house is an open floor plan, so the dining room is still part of the family room.

Here are the 2 cabinets that we moved to the dining room.   We added some of her home decor accessories to them.  The room is not green!  That is just my photography skills or should I say, lack of!

She even added a beautiful green silk runner on the table,  and candle holders, but of course I forgot to take a picture!

Once she adds some home accessories for detail to the top of both cabinets and some wall decor accessories, it will be just beautifu!  That big wall was the perfect spot for these 2 large cabinets, they balance out the large room and LONG wall and she loves it!

We then pulled the sofa off the back wall, added a side table on both ends, and a buffet to the back wall.  Once again, the size of the side tables was important,  one side of the sofa has a lot of open space so we used a larger end table, the other side of the sofa had small space so we chose a small, narrow table to keep it from hugging the wall and looking cramped!

This arrangement of furniture made the room feel a lot more comfortable, cozy and inviting.  And I just love the throw pillows!  We found them at Target.  Once we get the perfect wall art hung, it will be a very pretty, balanced room!.  As you can tell, it has a very high ceiling and BIG wall, her wall art and home decor accessories have to be BIG to balance out that space.  We will just tweak this space until it is the right scale for that large wall.  We will also change the other accessories on the buffet once the art is hung on the wall.    This was temporary, it was Zach’s living shrine that he loved.  We will also hang curtain panels to the window, I think we should go light, she has a lot of dark wood tones, (including hardwood floors in the future), and this room needs to be light!  Scale and balance are very important when decorating a space.   You don’t want a large space to swallow your decor, all you will see is SPACE and your decor will just kind of get lost in that space!  An example of this is the above picture if it was left this way!  And you sure don’t want to over do a small space with large decor.  That would be like gaining weight and trying to wear your smaller clothes.   I think that should have left a great visual in your head for maintaining proportion! ;-)

My sister chose Benjamin Moore, Edge comb Gray as the paint color.  It is a very light gray and the contrast looks great with the dark wood!  I can’t wait to see the room when it is completely finished!

It was a great weekend, going home seems to fill an empty space in my heart.  Small towns  and family are one of a kind!  Cairo is a special place to me, some of my most special friendships were made in Cairo.  I have so many great memories (and some I would rather forget), but I am very grateful to call it home.  I miss those good ‘ole days and  Southern living!

Life is Good!

Please leave me a comment to let me know you were here!  I can’t wait to hear from ya’ll!  Oh and thanks for all the page visits so far, I am pleasantly surprised at my blog traffic so far!  You guys are amazing!  But you can always help this girl out by liking my blog to your facebook page and share it with all your friends!  And you can always subscribe to receive my blog as it is updated!   It would be really great if you would do that for me!  Thanks!!

why in the world do I want to BLOG?

why in the world do I want to BLOG?

As time gets closer for David to deploy, I find myself wondering what in the world am I gonna do to help make time pass by quicker!  I also find that I REALLY DON’T sleep at night, and I also realize that he is going to be gone for our 14th anniversary, Gabby’s birthday, first day of school, soccer season, Volleyball club tryouts, Hayley’s birthday, Science Fair projects, excruciating Math homework, essays, vocabulary tests, Hayley’s first semester of Spanish, (which he speaks almost fluently!) splitting up on weekends because our girls have to be at 2 different places at the same time, Thanksgiving, and all those wonderful 4 day Federal holiday weekends that we share during that time!  But most importantly, I am just gonna  miss him.  His presence, his strength, his sense of humor, the confidence that when something goes wrong, he will make it all better, basically his everything!    Sometimes  I think the anxiety that I am feeling will take my breath away!  However, I really do know (once I wrap my head around him being gone) that we will be just fine, after all we are GOD STRONG,  ARMY STRONG and Team HOFFS!  We can make it through ANYTHING!!!

I also remind myself that “I can do all things through Christ who strengths me”!

I found this on pinterest the other day, and have been going back to read it often.   I guess today is the right time to share it with you.  I guess with the lack of sleep and this horrible head cold has left me feeling a little “unsettled” today.

I think this sums it all up, and I guess the idea to blog will be  ”that task” to fill my time while he is away!  It is something that I enjoy, and I think it will be something fun for me to focus on.  That may sound strange to those of you who have never experienced the separation of your spouse, but trust me, what I feel is TOTALLY validated by each and every MILITARY spouse who has endured a deployment, and many have endured several deployments!  Please remember to pray for our TROOPS and the families that are living this life daily. Some days are going to be harder than others, so please pray for continued strength for me and my girls as well.  Also pray for David’s safety.

So what does all of this have to do with making a house a home? Our home is filled with love, happiness, acceptance, comfort, and strength!  Our home is that place we go to when we need peace and comfort.  Even though David will be gone and we will miss him terribly, I promise to continue to make our home that very special place to be!  After all, HOME is where the ARMY sends you and definitely where your HEART is!

Mirror, Mirror on the wall…

Mirror, Mirror on the wall…

Good Morning!

Something that I’ve been seeing a lot lately are decorative mirrors, and I just have to share with you the mirrors that catch my eye and hopefully give you some home decorating ideas that you can use.   The right decorative mirror can really update your space!   I LOVE the sunburst and round shaped mirrors, especially when hanging over a bed!  What a great home decor accessory that adds instant drama to any space!

I also see silver or gold mirrors hanging over dark furniture, LOVE this!!  This looks so elegant to me!!

I even like the white mirrors, they really add a modern flair!

Mirrors are perfect for foyers, hallways and dining rooms too!

This mirror is one of my FAVORITE groupings! !  I love the dark furniture, silver/glass mirror, however I would prefer a round one, but this square looks good too!  LOVE the home decor accessories that are used- a potted orchid, picture frames, and white garden stools under the table! PERFECT for a foyer! And a perfect modern home decor look!

Mirrors are perfect hanging over mantels!

*Some of the above photos can be seen at Centsationalgirl blog and DecorPad.  I like to look at these web pages, they inspire me plus they give me home decor ideas.

Hopefully these mirrors and tips on how to use them will bring the home decorator out of you!

How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets

How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets

FINALLY, I have some time to sit down and get to the pictures of our kitchen, before and after my husband got his hands on it!  I think my husband ROCKS and most importantly, he loves home DIY home improvement projects as much as I love decorating, especially when power tools are involved!   Go ahead and grab that Coke Zero!  This home improvement, DIY kitchen transformation is amazing!  It’s going to teach you how to paint kitchen cabinets white!

First I just have to show you what my hubby did!  You see that big Magnolia tree in the front yard?  Well that tree is gone!  It was blocking the front of my house.  My husband cut it down….with an ax (because his chainsaw kept dying).  I told you he rocks!!  And the front of my house looks so much better!  Even my neighbors have told me so!

Now the front of my house looks like this.

home improvement

My landscaper (AKA my dad) has not decided what to do with that empty space yet.  I’m sure he will come up with exactly the right thing to place there!

Don’t you just love how green my grass is?  David used Scott’s Snap-Pac fertilizer on it and it works amazing!

OK, ok onto the painted kitchen cabinets!  Here are pictures of the kitchen cabinets BEFORE David painted them.  Thank You to Dyan Pithers,  Coldwell Banker, for the before pictures.

Please note these were taken when the previous owners lived here, therefore the home decor is NOT mine!

The kitchen cabinets were VERY orange, and orange definitely was not part of my home decorating plan!  Because they are solid wood and the style of them were pretty simple and plain, I just knew that David could bring those babies to life!

And here are what the kitchen cabinets look like after David refinshed them and painted them white!  I just love white kitchen cabinets!!  They look so clean, classy, and timeless!

Didn’t he do a WONDERFUL job!  I will be changing the floor to a darker hardwood floor and adding granite or marble countertops.  That should help with the designer look that I am going after!

What we did:

We painted the kitchen Sherwin Williams’ Gateway Gray.  I had the Sherwin Williams paint guy mix it at only 50% to lighten the paint color a shade.

We replaced the black kitchen appliances with stainless steel kitchen appliances, except we haven’t replaced the microwave and oven.  I am yet to find one that I love and willing to spend that amount of $$ for!  If you recommend one, please let me know!

David replaced all the kitchen cabinet hardware to brushed stainless steel hardware which we bought at Lowe’s Home Improvement Store.  David also replaced the hanging light fixture over the kitchen table with a brushed nickel light fixture from  Lowe’s .   I was surprised at the variety and prices!   You should be able to find one you love that will fit your budget!

When my husband painted the white kitchen cabinets, I’m not gonna lie,  it took a while, but he took his time and they turned out great.  He began by removing all of the cabinets and drawer fronts, removed the hardware and cleaned them thoroughly with soapy water.  He then sanded all of them lightly with 120 grit sand paper.  Next he sprayed them with a high adhesion latex primer that we bought from Sherwin Williams, sanded them very lightly again to make sure they were smooth, and then sprayed them with the final paint topcoat.   He used an HVLP paint sprayer connected to his air compressor, but (since he had to completely take the sprayer apart to clean it each time he painted), he spent a LOT of time adjusting the air/paint mixture in order for it to spray without splatters.  After they were completely dry, we remounted everything and put on the new hardware.

Here is the best tip ever!   If you take your cabinet doors and drawer fronts down, number each of them, maybe on the back side.  Just figure out something to keep track of what number it is, so when you paint over the number, you will not be like me, frustrated to the max with figuring out where the heck the door goes!!   Make a “map” of where each numbered cabinet was hung.

how to paint kitchen cabinets white

Why do this?  Because builders don’t always place screws into the same place on every cabinet and especially drawer fronts.  If you mix them around and remount them wherever, you’ll find that a lot of them are crooked and won’t shut right!

We have accomplished alot in the short amount of time we have been here.  We have had to prioritize each project for each room because each room has needed attention.  Now we get to go back and FINISH our Honey Do list.  Unfortunetly, Uncle Sam called and David is needed in Afganistan.  All projects will have to be on hold until he returns!

Our honey do list for my Kitchen is still kinda long, but that’s what it will take to complete my home vision!

-add crown molding to tops of the cabinets

-replace the horrible ceramic tile with hardwood floors

-replace counter tops with marble counter tops

-find a stainless steel oven and microwave that has great reviews!  any suggestions?

-replace kitchen faucet

-replace glass stove top with gas cook top

-add pendant light over island

-repaint kitchen island a dark color, maybe

I think when this honey do list is complete, I will be one happy chef! Chef?  Did I call myself a chef?  Well we will just have to wait and see if a beautiful white kitchen inspires me to be one!

Does you kitchen inspire you to cook?

Please subscribe to my blog and let your friends know about me!  I have added a facebook “like” icon and other ways to subscribe to my blog.  Thanks for following me and please pray for our Troops and pray for the safety of my husband.
